Why buy a refurbished laptop for programming?

Developers need memory, a good keyboard and a machine that stays reliable, not the newest design. Ex-corporate ThinkPads and EliteBooks were built for exactly that kind of all-day work, and refurbished they cost a fraction of a new laptop with the same 16GB of RAM. Every laptop on this page is tested, securely wiped, loaded with genuine Microsoft Windows Professional and covered by a 1-year warranty.

Need more power for containers, virtual machines or machine learning? Our mobile workstations have 32GB of RAM and NVIDIA graphics. Studying? See our student laptops, or compare every model in our full range of refurbished laptops.

What specs do you need for programming?

Code itself is light. What slows a developer laptop down is everything that runs around it: the IDE, browser tabs, containers, emulators and virtual machines.

16GB of RAM

Memory is the spec developers feel most. An IDE such as Visual Studio Code, IntelliJ or Android Studio, a browser full of documentation and a local database quickly fill 8GB, which is why every laptop on this page has 16GB or more.

A recent Core i5 or i7

A faster processor shortens compile, build and test times. An 8th generation or newer Core i5 has four cores and handles web and scripting work well. A Core i7 helps with large projects in compiled languages.

Windows Pro, WSL and Docker

Docker Desktop's WSL 2 backend needs a 64-bit processor with hardware virtualisation, 8GB of system RAM and a supported edition such as Windows 10 or 11 Pro. Every laptop ships with genuine Windows Professional.

A keyboard built for all day

You type all day, so the keyboard matters. ThinkPad and EliteBook business keyboards are made for long hours, and a docking station adds a second monitor at your desk: code on one screen, output on the other.

Laptops for programming: frequently asked questions

What is the best laptop for programming on a budget?

A refurbished business laptop with an 8th generation or newer Core i5, 16GB of RAM and an SSD. It handles web development, Python, Java and most student coursework, and costs far less than a new laptop with the same memory. Every laptop on this page has at least 16GB of RAM.

Is 16GB of RAM enough for programming?

For most developers, yes. 16GB runs an IDE, a browser, a local database and a few Docker containers together. Choose 32GB if you run several virtual machines, an Android emulator alongside other tools, or large data science workloads. Our mobile workstations have 32GB.

Is a Core i5 or Core i7 better for coding?

A Core i5 is enough for learning, web development and scripting languages. A Core i7 shortens build times on large projects in compiled languages such as C++, Java or C#. For most developers, more RAM makes a bigger difference than the step from i5 to i7.

Can I run Linux tools on these laptops?

Yes. Every laptop ships with genuine Windows Professional, which includes the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Hyper-V. The Intel Core processors in these laptops support hardware virtualisation, which WSL 2 and Docker Desktop need.

Do I need a graphics card for programming?

Not for most programming. Web, mobile and backend development run fine on integrated graphics. You only need a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card for GPU work such as machine learning with CUDA or game development, and our mobile workstations have one.

Is a refurbished laptop good for computer science students?

Yes. A refurbished ThinkPad or EliteBook with 16GB of RAM runs the IDEs, compilers and tools used in most computer science courses, costs far less than new, and is covered by our 1-year warranty.
