Which workstation tier?
Workstations come in three tiers. Choose by how many processors and how much memory your software needs.
Entry: HP Z240, Dell Precision 3620
One Intel Xeon E3 or Core i7 processor. Good for 2D CAD, Revit on smaller projects and photo editing.
Mid-range: HP Z440, Precision 5810, ThinkStation P500
One Xeon E5 processor with more cores and much more memory capacity, for 3D modelling and larger assemblies.
High-end: HP Z840, Precision 7910, ThinkStation P900
Two Xeon E5 processors for rendering, simulation and very large datasets.

What is a workstation computer?
A workstation is a desktop built for professional software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit and 3D or video tools. It supports more memory, Xeon processors and professional graphics cards, and is certified by software vendors.
Is a refurbished workstation good for CAD?
Yes. An HP Z, Dell Precision or Lenovo ThinkStation with a Xeon or Core i7, 32GB of RAM and a professional NVIDIA graphics card handles CAD and 3D work well, at a fraction of the new price.
What computer do I need for AutoCAD?
Autodesk's requirements for AutoCAD 2026 are 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, a 2.5 to 2.9 GHz processor with 8 logical cores, 8GB of RAM and a 2GB graphics card as a basic minimum. Autodesk recommends a 3 GHz or faster processor, 32GB of RAM, an 8GB graphics card and an SSD, which is where a workstation pays off.
