A refurbished laptop is a pre-owned device that has been professionally tested, cleaned, repaired where needed, and verified as fully working. Buying refurbished is the most cost-effective way to get a reliable laptop in South Africa – typically 40-70% cheaper than new – without compromising on the build quality you get from business-grade brands like HP, Dell and Lenovo.

Most of the laptops we stock came out of corporate environments where they were used in offices for two to four years, then retired well before the end of their useful life. They have years of work left in them.

Every laptop we list goes through a multi-step refurbishment process before it reaches you:

• Visual and physical inspection – chassis, hinges, ports, screen and keyboard checked.
• Component testing – battery health, RAM, storage, fans, Wi-Fi and webcam tested individually.
• Data wipe – the previous owner’s data is securely erased to industry standard.
• Reinstall – a clean, genuine licensed copy of Windows is installed and activated.
• Cleaning – interior dust removed, exterior cleaned, keyboard sanitised.
• Cosmetic grading – the laptop is graded A, B or C based on visible wear (see below).
• Final QA – a senior technician signs off before the laptop is listed for sale.

Only laptops that pass every step get listed. Anything that fails goes to parts or recycling.

All Device Shop refurbished laptops are 100% functional and covered by the same 1-year warranty. The grade refers only to cosmetic condition:

• Grade A – near-new condition. Minimal to no visible wear. Looks like a recent ex-corporate machine.
• Grade B – light cosmetic wear. Small scuffs on the lid or palm rest. Performs identically to Grade A.
• Grade C – noticeable cosmetic wear (deeper scratches, faded keys). The cheapest option, ideal if you care about price over looks.

• HP ProBook & EliteBook – reliable all-rounders with strong keyboards and good battery life. The ProBook 440 / 450 series and EliteBook 830 / 840 are our most popular HP picks.

• RAM: 8GB is the sweet spot for browsing, email, Office, Zoom, and most schoolwork. Go to 16GB only if you run heavy multitasking, virtual machines, Photoshop or Premiere.
• Storage: 256GB SSD is enough for most users. SSD (not HDD) is non-negotiable — it’s the single biggest speed difference. All our standard refurbished laptops ship with an SSD.
• Processor: Intel Core i5 of any recent generation is the right answer for ~80% of buyers. i3 is fine for browsing-only use. i7 is overkill unless you have a specific demanding workload.
• Screen: 14″ is the most portable. 15.6″ gives more screen for the same chassis weight.

Every refurbished laptop from Device Shop ships with a 1-year hardware warranty. If something goes wrong inside the warranty period, we repair or replace it – at no additional cost to you.
